Anglo-Saxon Invasions c. mid 5th Century AD
- Jutes (present day Denmark & Schleswig-Holstein, Germany)
- Angles (present day Schleswig-Holstein, Germany)
- Saxons (present day Lower Saxony, Germany)
Scandinavian languages infiltrate Old English as early as c. 790s.
Norman French introduced from the successful invasion by the William the Conqueror and the Normans c. 1066 towards the end of old English.
- During this time, Latin was still used through scholarly and religious institutions, while Celtic was still dominating the rest of Britain in addition to English.
